If Angelo Mathews took his guard before calling for a new helmet he wouldn’t have been in the record books to be the first baseman to be ‘Timed Out’ in International Cricket!
Angelo has himself to blame for being ignorant of the law rather than reiterate that Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was not sporty enough to withdraw his appeal. Taking guard is the first act performed by a batter when they arrive at the crease.
The literal meaning of taking guard is to mark where you’d like to stand in relation to the stumps.
