IGP directs CID to probe Kalutara girl’s death

Lodge owner’s wife remanded till May 15

Inspector General C. D. Wickramaratne has directed CID DIG Prasad Ranasinghe of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in writing to take over the investigation into the death of the Kalutara schoolgirl, which has caused great controversy in society.

The police headquarters disclosed that the reason for assigning the investigation to CID is that there is a need to carry out investigations of this death in a comprehensive and transparent manner.

IGP has directed the attention of the CID to investigate several aspects related to this death that have not been investigated so far. Kalutara South Police officers have arrested a 47-year-old woman, a resident of Katukurunda, Kalutara who is said to be the wife of the owner of the lodge. The owner of the lodge is yet to be arrested for giving a room to a minor to stay with a male.

The wife of the lodge owner was remanded till May 15 after being produced before Kalutara Chief Magistrate Hemamali Halpandeniya yesterday. Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the woman was arrested for several offences, including not correctly verifying the identity of the minor who came to the lodge.Police said the arrested woman was the receptionist at the lodge on the day the death occurred. The suspect was scheduled to be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate.
