IGP orders probe into Kegalle assault case

The Inspector General of Police has directed the Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Sabaragamuwa Province to take disciplinary action against the police officer who was involved in assaulting an individual in Kegalle town.

Police began investigations into a video of a Traffic Policeman assaulting an individual on the road that has gone viral on social media.

During an inquiry made it was revealed that this assault had taken place in the Kegalle area.

Police investigations have revealed that this individual is a drug addict and he had assaulted a woman with a iron rod a few minutes before this assault took place.

Police said that this incident has taken place when this individual attempted to attack the police officials abusing them verbally.

He had been arrested and remanded several times over drug related offences and a case has been filed against him over the murder of a prison inmate while he was in remand custody. He is on bail at the moment.

Police in a statement said that this woman in question is also warded in hospital.The assault had taken place when the police arrived to arrest the person.

As it has been noticed that the officer in question has assaulted the suspect, the IGP has ordered the DIG in charge of Sabaragamuwa province to take disciplinary action against the police officer.
