IGP suspends seven Officers for framing PC
IGP Chandana Wickramaratne ordered the suspension of seven Police officers, including OIC Anuradhapura Anti-corruption Division, with immediate effect. They are accused of falsely arresting a Police Constable (PC) on charges of possessing and transporting 85,010 mg of ganja, as an act of revenge, and filing a case against him before the Medawachchiya Magistrate’s Court.
The IGP’s suspension orders underlines that it is for bringing the Sri Lanka Police Department and the public service into disrepute, by illegally arresting a police constable and maliciously prosecuting him.
The suspended suspects are Anuradhapura Anti-corruption Division OIC, Inspector R.M.A.G. Sanjeeva Anuradha Aluthgedara, Sergeants (7682) Bandara Balasuriya, (12406) W.M.B. Chaturanga Ratnayake, (53403) U.B. Manjula Pradeep Kumara and PCs (71531) M. Roshan Madhusankha and (68493) L.P. Sunanda Senaratne.
On January 18, 2021, PC (83840) J.D. Sandun was falsely arrested for the possession and transportation of 85,010 mg of cannabis, on behalf of IGP Chandana Wickramaratne, SSP D.S. Wickramasinghe, Director of the Special Investigation Bureau at Police Headquarters, and charged before Medawachchiya Magistrate Priyantha Halyala.
SSP D.S. Wicksramasinghe informed the Medawachchiya Magistrate that, on behalf of the IGP and the Sri Lanka Police Department, he would apologise to PC J.D. Sadun, for the injustice.
It was assured that officers of the Anuradhapura Anti-corruption Division, including the OIC, who committed this illegal act, would be dismissed from the Police service and prosecuted before the Medawachchiya Magistrate’s Court, on the charge of malicious prosecution against PC J.D. Sadun.
PC J.D. Sadun, in turn, has filed a fundamental rights case before the Supreme Court, demanding compensation of Rs.100 million.
