Leader of the Nawa Janatha Peramuna, Sugeeshwara Bandara has expressed concern about the activities of unauthorised lending companies operating at a regional level, endangering low-income earners’ livelihoods and properties.

He made these remarks at the opening ceremony of a Japanese Language Training School established by the Aluthgama Bo Sewana Foundation.

Bandara further stated that these high-interest loans are causing suffering to the country’s people. And to address this issue, his Party intends to work with the relevant State institutions to find a solution within the next two weeks. He added that they have already requested an opportunity to discuss necessary changes to the Law with the relevant authorities.

The entire business community in the country supports the Government’s decision to terminate the Parate Law. However, high-interest loan schemes continue to be a problem for the business community, and urgent regulation is needed for this. Until that occurs, there should be a process in place to protect people’s properties from these lending companies, Bandara added.

The event was attended by several distinguished persons, including the President’s Legal Director Naleen Samarakoon, veteran Cricketer Thilina Thushara Mirando, and other heads of Government institutions in the region.
