The IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva met President Ranil Wickremesinghe in a crucial meeting held during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in Economic Progress in Meeting in New York USA.

She commended the Sri Lankan government for its effective measures in curbing inflation and nurturing a conducive environment for business growth, as well as the flourishing tourism industry. Sri Lanka from over 70% inflation a year ago managed gradually to lower it to around 2.5% last month. As a result of the policy measures taken thus far, and well anchored inflation expectations, inflation is expected to stabilise around mid-single digit levels over the medium term.

Sri Lanka has already surpassed the total arrivals for 2022 and is set to have over 1.55 million arrivals this year while a revenue in the excess of USD 2.5 billion too is expected. During the meeting, Georgieva and President Wickremesinghe delved into the ongoing financial sector reforms and the substantial progress made in debt restructuring initiatives.

She expressed her satisfaction with the government’s commitment to enhancing the overall economic landscape. The duo also discussed other vital economic matters.

Notable figures attending this significant meeting included Foreign Minister, Ali Sabry, President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake, Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe, UN Permanent Representative, Mohan Peiris, and President’s Advisor Dinesh Weerakkody alongside senior officials representing both Sri Lanka and the International Monetary Fund.
