IMF Upgrades Global Growth Forecast for 2023

0 5

The global lender (IMF) has recently revised its outlook for global growth in 2023 for the better citing the resilience of the service sector and a strong labor market during the first quarter. However, the IMF warns that growth is expected to slow down to three percent in 2023 and remain at that level due to weak performance among advanced economies.

During a press conference, IMF Chief Economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas acknowledged that the global economy is gradually recovering from the pandemic and the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, he cautioned that the road to full recovery is not without challenges.

Despite the slight improvement in the economic outlook, the projected growth rate of three percent for 2023 and 2024 is significantly lower than the 6.3 percent growth witnessed in 2021 and the 3.5 percent growth recorded last year, as per the IMF’s World Economic Outlook (WEO) update.

Inflation, a major concern for many economies, has shown some signs of improvement. The IMF now expects consumer prices to rise by 6.8 percent this year, which is a decrease by 0.2 percentage points from its April forecast.

While the IMF’s recent update shows some improvement in the global economic landscape, uncertainties persist, especially in advanced economies. As the world continues to grapple with the aftermath of the pandemic and geopolitical tensions, policymakers and businesses must remain vigilant and responsive to ensure a sustainable and inclusive recovery.
