Impartial probe on giraffe’s death

National Zoological Department Director General R. Marasinghe has made a written request to the Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Ministry Secretary Chandra Herath to appoint a committee to conduct an impartial investigation into the sudden death of a female giraffe at the Dehiwala National Zoo.

This female giraffe, who was about 25 years old, was suffering from a wound on her leg, and on the December 7, the veterinarians had given her antibiotics.

Veterinary officers from Wildlife Conservation Department and Peradeniya Faculty of Veterinary Medicine conducted a postmortem on the body of the giraffe at Dehiwela National Zoo and Director General R. Marasinghe said that it will take a few days to receive the report. In addition, the Director General said that an impartial investigation will be conducted regarding the death of the animal, to ascertain the veracity of the information received that the animal died due to ingestion of an overdose of anesthetic drugs.
