Incessant rains, floods wreak havoc islandwide

33,493 people from 8,974 families have been affected by heavy rains and strong winds, while three people are reported missing.

As South-West monsoon conditions gradually establish across the island, prevailing showery and windy conditions will continue further, with cloudy skies to prevail over most parts of the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western Southern and Northern Provinces

Heavy rains above 150 mm are possible in some places in the Western and North-Western Provinces.

Heavy showers above 100mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western Provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Mannar Districts.

Winds of 30Km/h-40Km/h will blow across the island from time to time. Several spells of showers will occur in the North-Central Province.

Director of Irrigation (Hydrology and Disaster Management Division) S.P.C. Sugeeshwara announced that two sluice gates have been opened in the Anuradhapura Rajangana Reservoir, releasing water at the rate of 1,400 cu.ft/second, and another two sluice gates have been opened in the Angamuwa Reservoir, releasing water at the rate of 1,600 cu.ft/second.

The Irrigation Department advises people downstream to remain vigilant for potential floods due to the ongoing rainfall.
