India claimed a 243-run resounding victory against South Africa in their Cricket World Cup match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata yesterday. With 16 points, India stands as the only unbeaten team and has one match left. South Africa has 12 points, and Australia and New Zealand trail with 10 and 8 points, respectively.

South Africa struggled to chase India’s target of 327 and was bowled out for 83 in 27.1 overs. Leg-spinner Ravindra Jadeja captured five wickets for 33 in his nine-over spell. Virat Kohli was named the Man of the Match.

Virat Kohli scored the 49th ODI century on his 35th birthday, as India posted a formidable 326/5 in 50 overs. The batter hit 10 boundaries in his innings and remained unbeaten at 101 off 121 balls, equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most ODI centuries with his 49th hundred.

India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first, with openers Sharma and Shubman Gill swiftly adding 62 runs in 5.5 overs. Sharma took the lead, playing an aggressive innings with 40 runs from 24 balls, with 6 fours and 2 sixes, while Gill offered solid support, contributing 23 runs in 24 balls with 4 fours and six.

After the dismissal of skipper Rohit Sharma, Kohli showcased his usual finesse. His partnership with Shreyas Iyer who scored 77 in 87 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes, added 134 runs for the third wicket, putting immense pressure on the South Africa team. Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten with 29 runs while Suryakumar Yadav added 22 runs in 14 balls with 5 boundaries, helping India cross the 309-run mark.

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup with an ankle injury.
