India does not favour any Candidate; will work with whoever is elected – Indian Envoy Santosh Jha
High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha said that India does not favour any candidate in the election fray, and his country is ready to work with any individual elected to the Presidency through a democratic process.
“We don’t extend preferential treatment to any candidate in the election fray and India is prepared to work with any individual who is elected to the Presidency through a democratic process. This has been the longstanding policy of the Indian government and it remains in effect,” the High Commissioner said.
High Commissioner Jha said that India wants to see a stable neighbourhood and will never involve itself in the internal affairs of other countries .
He believes that establishing land connectivity between Sri Lanka and India will undoubtedly transform the dynamics for both nations. “It will be a game changer for Sri Lanka too. Sri Lanka stands to gain significantly from this connectivity, especially given the rapid growth of the Indian economy”, he said.
During an interaction with a group of journalists in the print media, the High Commissioner said that Sri Lanka will also see massive infrastructure development with the establishment of land connectivity between the two nations. He added that Indian investment in Sri Lanka will rise to US$ 5 billion within the next five years. “70% of railway track from Matara to KKS has either been reconstructed or rehabilitated with Indian assistance, with cooperation between the two nations extending to almost all areas. “Our people and our culture are closely intertwined, and we are not small or big brothers but Civilisational twins”, he said.
High Commissioner Jha said that India is very much concerned about its security, and the Indian ocean, and hoped that neighbouring countries, specially Sri Lanka will understand this aspect.
