The 22nd Model Village built in the Galle District with grant support from the Government of India was jointly inaugurated and handed over to beneficiaries by Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka , Santosh Jha and Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. H. The newly handed over ‘Didula’ Model Village comprises 24 housing units. This initiative is part of a broader Model Village Housing Project being implemented jointly across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka in partnership with the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, backed by an MoU signed in October 2017 between the governments of India and Sri Lanka.
In total, the project provides housing facilities for 600 low-income families nationwide, with each district receiving a model village of 24 houses allocated to families selected by District Housing Committees.
With the completion of the Galle project, model villages have now been launched and handed over in 21 other districts, including Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Jaffna, Kandy, Gampaha, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Matale, Puttalam, Colombo, Trincomalee, Monaragala, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Ratnapura, Ampara, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Kalutara and Polonnaruwa.
The overall project has achieved nearly 98.6% progress, with the final three model villages expected to be handed over to beneficiaries soon. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by District Parliamentarians, the Chairman and senior officials of the National Housing Development Authority, and representatives from the Galle district administration.
