India go full strength for Asian Games cricket; Sri Lanka face tour clash

0 0

India’s decision to name a near full-strength squad for the 2026 Asian Games has highlighted a challenge facing Sri Lanka, whose top players are expected to be unavailable for much of the tournament due to a scheduled tour of England.

The Asian Games men’s cricket competition in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, is set to take place from September 24 to October 3.

Sri Lanka’s white-ball tour of England is scheduled during the same period, with three One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals to be played between late September and early October.

The scheduling clash is likely to prevent Sri Lanka from naming its strongest squad for the Asian Games, as most of the country’s leading cricketers feature regularly in both ODI and T20I formats.

While Sri Lanka’s T20I series in England is expected to conclude before the latter stages of the Asian Games, potentially allowing a handful of T20 specialists to join the squad in Japan, such a scenario appears unlikely given the significant overlap between Sri Lanka’s ODI and T20I player pools.

In contrast, India have opted to send a strong squad to the Asian Games, underlining the importance they place on the tournament as cricket continues its push towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Asian Games cricket tournament will feature several of Asia’s top cricketing nations, but Sri Lanka may have to rely on a second-string squad unless changes are made to the international schedule. (Newswire).
