Two fishermen rescued by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) on July 31 from the Indian fishing trawler that sank due to an accident in Lankan waters off Delft Island Jaffna, and the body of one fisherman, who died while being admitted to Punguduthiv Hospital, Jaffna, for treatment, were handed over to the Indian Naval Ship ‘INS BITRA’ on Friday (2) by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) at the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) between India and Sri Lanka.

Detecting Indian fishing trawlers poaching in Lankan waters off the Delft Island, Jaffna, the SLN deployed craft on July 31 to apprehend those trawlers. During the Navy’s efforts to seize the poaching Indian fishing trawlers, the trawlers attempted to evade the Navy with aggressive manoeuvres, defying the Navy’s orders. During this incident, a trawler collided with a naval craft and sank a little while later.

Responding swiftly, the SLN launched a search and rescue operation for the four Indian fishermen from that trawler. The Navy tossed lifesaving gear to the sinking trawler and successfully rescued three fishermen, one of whom was in critical condition and was admitted to the nearest Punguduthivu Hospital in Jaffna. However, hospital authorities confirmed that the fisherman was deceased upon admission.

Amidst rough seas and strong winds, the other fisherman has gone missing in the waters. Along with the Indian Coast Guard, the SLN mounted a search and rescue operation off Delft Island, to locate the missing fisherman.

The two rescued fishermen, who were in good health, along with the body of the deceased fisherman were handed over to the Indian Naval Ship ‘INS BITRA’, through the SLCG, at the IMBL.
