Indian Foreign Minister invites Fisheries Minister for discussion regarding poaching Indian fishers
Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda states that the Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Jayashankar has invited him to arrive in New Delhi to discuss the poaching of Indian Fishermen in Sri Lankan territorial waters. The Minister made this statement at the meeting of the District Development Committee held recently at Jaffna District Secretariat, in response to a question raised by the representatives of Fishery Societies in Jaffna District, whether the Minister discussed this issue with the Indian Foreign Affairs Minister during his recent visit to Sri Lanka.
The Minister stated that when he met Dr. Jayashankar and had a discussion with him about the Fishermen’s issues in the North and the Indian Foreign Minister invited him to come to India to discuss further bringing justice to the fishermen in the North whose livelihood is being affected by the illegal fishing activities of Indian fishermen.
During the Development Committee meeting, the Minister discussed the control of illegal fishing activities and minimising the road accidents in the Jaffna District and instructed the Police Officers and other Security Forces to take necessary actions.
The Minister also said that he had already instructed the relevant officials to implement necessary projects to prevent these illegal fishing activities and instructed them to look into the progress of these projects and to submit a report on the current state of them.
