Inland Revenue still to recover Rs.904 Bn unpaid tax penalties – Champika
The Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means, MP Patali Champika Ranawaka revealed in a press conference held in the Parliament recently that Rs.904 billion rupees were due to the Department of Inland Revenue as unpaid tax penalties and interest by December 31 last year. The Chairman also stated that the Inland Revenue Department has been requested from time to time to provide the list of those who have to pay the large arrears of taxes, penalties and interest to be collected, but the list has not been provided till date.The MP said that Rs.904 billion is an amount that can pay the salaries of 1.4 million Government employees.
MP Champika Ranawaka also stated that it will take at least two decades for the Inland Revenue Department to open 1.5 million tax files under the new policies.
Also, Ranawaka said that as of 06-30-2023, the unpaid tax arrears to the Customs Department is Rs.6710 million and the Excise Department’s tax arrears for the first six months of this year is Rs.6,235 million.
