Investigation to apprehend sugar scam suspects
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday informed Colombo Additional Magistrate N.Ilangasinghe that an investigation to apprehend the suspects involved in the 2020 sugar scam which allegedly caused a loss of Rs.15.9 billion to the state due to the reduction of taxes on imported sugar is underway.
The Criminal Investigation Department stated before the Court that by reducing the Import Tax amount from Rs.50 to 25 cents per kilogramme of sugar, the Sri Lankan Government lost a tax amount of Rs.15.9 billion.
“Several statements have already been recorded in relation to the incident,” the CID reported.
The CID also informed investigations were underway to ascertain whether excessive profits have been made to any party without giving the benefit of this tax reduction to the consumers.
