Making more investments to add key infrastructure to the ports and shipping industries will bring huge economic development to Sri Lanka, Maldives and other countries across the region, said U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung.

“These same ports play an integral role in strengthening the global supply chain, which is vital to all other countries around the world. The U.S. government recognizes just how important these sectors are and we hope to pursue new avenues of collaboration in support of the ports, shipping and logistics sectors while embracing sustainability along the way.”

She opined this at the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka hosted the IPBF Satellite Event under the theme “Driving Sustainable Development in the Ports Sector.”

Drawing from the expertise of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Maldives Ports Limited, South Asia Gateway Terminal, Colombo West International Terminal, and other stakeholders, the event showcased how best the ports and shipping industries can reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing efficiency and productivity.

In her keynote address, Chung reaffirmed the U.S. government’s commitment to promoting sustainable development trends and best practices across the ports, shipping and logistics industries.

“Just over a week ago the U.S. government, in collaboration with the Colombo Plan, sent a delegation representing the Port sectors from Sri Lanka to Washington, DC to meet with key stakeholders and learn about successful policies and procedures currently implemented at U.S. ports.

The delegation also visited Old Dominion University to explore its new School of Supply Chain and Maritime Logistics to better understand how ODU is preparing the next generation of ports and shipping leaders. The U.S. announced a $553 million project in November last year to build a deep-water shipping container terminal in the Port of Colombo. The project is billed as providing critical infrastructure for Sri Lanka with the potential to “transform Colombo into a world-class logistics hub at the intersection of major shipping routes and emerging markets.

Meanwhile, the Australian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Paul Stephens kicked off a presentation by the International Finance Corporation about Australian government-funded port development assistance in Bangladesh. In addition, the Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Mizukoshi Hideaki introduced a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) presentation on port security assistance funded by the Government of Japan. The audience, consisting of over 100 business leaders in the ports, shipping, and logistics sectors from Sri Lanka and Maldives, participated and the event was facilitated by CIMC Events (Pvt) Ltd.
