Irrigation Department issues Amber flood warning for Nilwala River Basin

The Irrigation Department has issued an Amber flood warning for the Nilwala River Basin, cautioning that minor flooding could occur in low-lying areas over the next 24 hours.

Released on October 15, 2026, at 6:00 PM and valid until 6:00 PM on October 16, 2026, flood warning message indicates that significant rainfall has been recorded across many parts of the upper and middle catchment areas of the Nilwala River Basin.

Based on prevailing weather conditions and an analysis of water levels at river gauging stations maintained by the department, authorities warn that minor flooding may affect low-lying areas within the Nilwala River floodplain across the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda and Matara.

Residents living in these vulnerable areas and motorists traveling through the region are urged to exercise extreme caution. Additionally, disaster management authorities have been requested to implement necessary precautionary measures. (Newswire)
