The Computer Crimes Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which conducted an investigation regarding the forgery of a letterhead of the Social Media Investigation Unit of the CID,
has arrested a tuition class teacher who is an information technology specialist of a company, on suspicion.
The suspect,a resident of Wadduwa is a graduate in Information Technology. The Computer Crimes Division stated that he had prepared a letter of the type issued by the Computer Crime
Investigation Unit using the forged letterhead and sent it to a young man through WhatsApp.
The letter had been sent to a young man he knew. The Computer Crimes Division stated that the letter had mentioned that legal action will be taken against this him for an offence, he has committed under Section 23 of the Penal Code.
This letter was forwarded to him by the IT teacher on his WhatsApp number, as a photocopy of the letter with the letterhead.
A senior officer of the Computer Crimes Division of the CID stated that the concerned young man came to the Computer Crimes Division to get information about this letter and to obtain an explanation about the crime he is alleged to have committed. It had then been revealed that the letter was a fake.This young man is a resident of Elpitiya. His girlfriend is studying for the Advanced Level examination in the mathematics stream. Investigations had revealed that he was attending tuition classes conducted by the information technology graduate. It has also been revealed that the graduate had tried to have a romantic relationship with the young man’s girlfriend in Elpitiya.
Investigations have also revealed that even though she expressed her unwillingness, and then the IT graduate conducting tuition classes, had posted on his Facebook page stating that this girl’s boyfriend, the young man from Elpitiya was bothering female students who came to his tuition class.
The suspected IT graduate was arrested and interrogated and told that the young man from Elpitiya had made a post against him on Facebook, so the letter was forged and sent to scare him.
The Computer Crime Investigation Division stated that the arrested IT graduate was released on bail after being produced at the Aluthkade Court on Tuesday (21).
