Jab drive not hindered by health strike – Health DDG

Deputy Director General of Health Services, Dr. Hemantha Herath stated that Covid vaccination programme was not hampered by the trade union action launched by several health unions yesterday (27) based on several demands.

He added that he believed that health professionals would not launch an unnecessary struggle at such a critical time of the Covid outbreak.

He was speaking at a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau yesterday (27).

A total of 44 trade unions in the health sector went on strike from 7.00 am yesterday (27) against the suspension of the Rs. 7,500 COVID relief allowance and several other demands.

The protest was based on eight demands, including the payment of the Covid relief allowance, the granting of special COVID leave without any restrictions, the removal of overtime pay restrictions, the filling of vacancies in all services, the immediate issuance of circulars relating to the staff service etc.

The strike was launched at major hospitals including Colombo National Hospital, Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Colombo North Teaching Hospital, National Eye Hospital, Kandy National Hospital. Staff at maternity, pediatric and cancer hospitals did not participate in the strike.
