Veteran artiste Jackson Anthony was laid to rest yesterday amidst a large gathering of his colleagues and fans from all walks of life, at St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Ragama.
Crowds kept streaming in to the private funeral parlour in Colombo and his residence at Ragama where the body was laid since Monday to get a final glimpse of the outstanding personality who left an indelible imprint in the hearts of thousands of people.
Mourners ranged from the mighty to the humblest, many of whom wept inconsolably reminiscing on his contribution to the world of the arts, while leading lights of various professions and other fields too were present in large numbers.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Ministers and politicians paid their last respects to Anthony. A grey pall hung over the route as his body was removed from his residence to the Church.
Pansakoolaya was held at his residence according to the Buddhist tradition before the coffin was taken from his residence to the church where Catholic service was held.
