Japan welcomes steps taken to revitalize Lankan economy

Acting Ambassador for Japan in Sri Lanka Kotaro Katsuki, congratulated Sri Lanka on obtaining the approval of the IMF Executive Board in March for its Extended Fund Facility.

“We welcome this major step which has helped towards the revitalization of the Sri Lankan economy,” he said at the inauguration of the Build SL Housing & Construction International Expo 2023 organised by Chamber of Construction Industry of Sri Lanka (CCISL) that concluded at BMICG on Sunday.

This came after a lot of work done by the Sri Lankan authorities and recognition from the international community on the reforms that have been carried out such as fiscal reform. ‘Build SL’ exhibition comes at a very timely moment, which brings together companies in the construction industry with great potential to stimulate economic growth of this country.”

He said that the Japanese companies have completed major landmark development projects in Sri Lanka.

“All of these projects have been carried out with the view of ensuring the Sri Lankan people their use for a long time including the economic and social line and the development of the country. Partly, they also symbolise the long standing friendship between Japan and Sri Lanka.” Japanese firms are currently engaged in various development projects in Sri Lanka and they are also closely working with Sri Lana construction companies in them. He also said that in order to support Sri Lanka, the Government of Japan has provided up to approximately 93 million USD worth of inundated grant assistance to Sri Lanka since 2022.

CCISL President Jayantha Perera said, “The success of the construction industry is the culmination of the success of its stakeholders that is contractors, architects, engineers, surveyors, related professionals and various suppliers.The Chamber and its stakeholders have an unremitting faith in the resuscitation of the industry and the CCI Build SL 2023 exhibition is a testament to the commitment and vision of the Industry stakeholders.”

The Annual Exhibition showcased products and services in the Housing and Construction Sector held for the 18th consecutive occasion.
