Java Lane through to semis of Expolanka Youth Cup
A well combined team effort enabled Java Lane to defeat Saunders by 2 goals to 1 and qualify for the semi-final of the Inter Club under-19 soccer tournament played for the ‘Expolanka Youth Cup’ at City League grounds yesterday.
After holding the rivals to a 1-all scoreline at the short whistle, the home town club Java Lane did well to score in the latter stage of the second half to oust the mighty Saunders team from the competition to become the fourth team to enter the semi-final stage.
Saunders had a firm control of the game from the outset and opened the scoring in the 9th minute of the first half through Sumnei Umar. This gave them the much needed confidence over their rivals. Their strikers made some teasing moves, but were foiled by some acrobatic goal keeping by Mohamed Abdullah the rival goalie who saved several chances, some of which would looked certain goals.
However, in the 22nd minute Java Lane strikers surged ahead and made inroads into rival territory and sneaked through their defense. M.N. Nadeem went solo to net the equaliser and to leave for the short whistle with a 1-all scoreline.
After resumption, both teams walked out in a determined bid to improvise and notch their second goal.
After some anxious moments in the 80th minute of the game Java Lane striker M.H.M. Shahir came to the limelight and was instrumental in scoring their second and winning goal.
He made a well timed header off a pass from midfield which completely hoodwinked the rival goalie Sharith Umal.
Saunders had to blame themselves for fluffing many scoring opportunities in the second half too.
