Sri Lanka Cricket Operations Manager Jerome Jayaratne once again back to the post of High Performance Center (HPC) Head as SLC overall Consultant Sanath Jayasuriya wanted to reconstruct the High Performance Centre very soon to focus on next T-20 World Cup and 2027 One day World Cup.
Under the service of Jerome Jayaratne High Performance Centre (HPC) did a good job but after replaced by two foreigners Simon Wills of England and Tim McCaskill of Australia, HPC duties were not up to the expectations.
HPC is the main place to construct good cricketers for the National team and it’s coaching staff has to get full responsibility. Foreign coaches don’t know our system and most of them have only paper qualifications. They are not even recognised from their own countries and we give big salaries to them. The best example when we won the 2014 T- 20 World Cup our National team head coach was Marvan Atapattu. Even we won the Wills World Cup in 1996 our head coach was Dav Whatmore who also a Sri Lankan born coach later played for Australia. However in between 1996 up to date how many foreign coaches came to Sri Lanka and non of them were able to guide the team to success. We have good coaches as well as coaching education system and we already conducted very higer level 3 coaching course in here and our coaches are very good and they have good knowledge.
Jerome Jayaratne the former S. Thomas’, Mt. Lavinia cricketer as well as former CCC cricketer is a knowledgeable person and today he is out from HPC and doing Chief Operation Officer role at SLC. He is one time National team interim coach and very close with Sri Lanka coaches. Sanath Jayasuriya wanted to get service of Jerome Jayaratne very soon.
Meanwhile Jayasuriya now aims to reintroduce Academies for spin and fast bowling to prepare players for national duty. This is also a good move. Those days when Rumesh Ratnayake and Champaka Ramanayake were head of fast bowling academy several talented fast bowlers produced to the Nationl side. Even Piyal Wijethunga and Ajith Ekanayake were at Spin bowling Academy. Jayasuriya wanted to get this level fast bowling and spin bowling Academy to produce good bowlers.
“Of course, there are certain things that have worked for us and certain things that have not. We need to examine why certain training methods have not worked and determine how we can improve them to suit our players. We need to understand our cricketing culture, the way we train, and so on, and tailor our programmes accordingly,” Jayasuriya emphasised.
Sri Lanka will play nine T20 matches–three each against Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Bangladesh–ahead of the T20 World Cup in June and they have busy schedule in 2024. In addition SLC already make busy domestic cricket tournament schedule and National Super League tournament will commence from January 18.
