St. Joseph’s College will look to regain the Lady Jayathilake Shield when they confront S. Thomas’ College in their Inter-Schools Under-20 ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament match at Havelock Park today.
The Josephians have already got off to a great start this season having outplayed Kingswood College 34-3 in their curtain raiser match played last week at the same venue.
In contrast, the Thomians will take the field at the backdrop of some uncertainty following their demoralising 13-20 defeat at the hands of Trinity College last week at Pallekele.
As a result, S. Thomas’ will now have a tough task to defend the Shield having defeated St. Joseph’s 24-22 after a lapse three years, when the two teams last met at Longden Place during the pandemic-hit 2020 season.
The two schools first met on the rugby field in 1955 and this annual fixture became a Shield game in 1965 when Josephian Lucian Jayathilake donated the Lady Jayathilake Shield in memory of his mother.
St. Joseph’s will be captained by speedy centre three quarter Teran Karunanayake while S. Thomas’ will be led by crack Number Eight Chariya Kurukulasuriya.
