Johan Taylor back with Kandy SC

One of the most experienced rugby union coaches Johan Taylor, who coached Kandy SC to win the league, knockouts and the sevens many times in the past, is back with the Nittawela Club and assisting head coach Fazil Marija. Taylor is a South African born coach.

With Johan’s credentials and vast experience with clubs and schools he filled the void extremely well. Taylor first came at the end of 2006 season and coached the team from 2007 for six years. He guided the Nittawela team to win both the knock out and league titles for five years, but the rugby’s double eluded them in 2012. He is a fine coach. He also coached Sri Lanka’s national team as well and Royal College in 2013.

He had a contract with Kandy Sports Club during the time Iswan Omar was Secretary. Taylor played most of his rugby in Ireland after leaving South Africa; besides, he is a Level 3 qualified rugby coach. . During his tenure earlier, Kandy Sports Club won the 2007 League Championship, captured the Clifford Cup and defeated all teams that season. In the first year, Kandy SC became unbeaten Champions and Triple Crown holders. During the following two years the club

finished as rugby Champions in Sri Lanka winning all trophies awarded by SLRFU. In 2010 and 2011 although they lost a few games, the club still continued to be the league rugby champions and winners of the Clifford Cup.

In 2012, it was a testing period for the club as the SLRFU introduced overseas players for all “A” division clubs. As a result trading local players posed Kandy Sports Club with challenges. Kandy SC is the only outstation club in the league tournament.

Former ruggerite Suresh no more

Kaasi Suresh former St. Anthony’s College, Kandy Sports Club, CR & FC “Bees” and CH & FC Kabaragoyas rugby player and one time committee member of Kandy SC passed away on Monday, he was 58 years old. He was partner of the Rada Beedi Company of Katugastota. During his playing days was talented scrumhalf with a good knowledge of the game.
