JVP which committed murder now criticising SL in Geneva – Manusha
Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara recently spoke at the ‘Let’s Win Sri Lanka – Smart Workers to Chilaw’ programme organised by his Ministry at the Shirley Corea Stadium in Chilaw on June 14.
He addressed allegations made by individuals who allegedly fled the country and sought asylum abroad after being involved in crimes such as murder and theft of identity cards, gold, and banks during the 1971 and 1988–’89 uprisings.
The Minister shared his experiences from attending the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. He said that he encountered Sri Lankans who were campaigning for the National People’s Power (NPP), and pointed out that these individuals were linked to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) during the revolts. They had committed crimes and sought asylum in Geneva, where they now reside, spreading false accusations against Sri Lanka to gain refugee status.
Minister Nanayakkara emphasised that these false accusations have forced Sri Lanka to respond at the UN Human Rights Council. He also highlighted the presence of a minority within Sri Lanka who harbour resentment and envy towards the country’s progress. These individuals do not contribute to the economy or send money back home to support their communities, unlike other Sri Lankan expatriates who invest in education, infrastructure, and local development.
The Minister commended those expatriates who continue to support their hometowns by funding free English and computer classes and promoting tourism. He proposed creating a programme to meet the needs of children in underprivileged schools in Sri Lanka, drawing inspiration from these dedicated individuals. Minister Nanayakkara recalled the severe economic crisis Sri Lanka faced two years ago, with the current President Ranil Wickremesinghe stepping in to lead the country out of it. At that time, the Treasury had less than US$ 20 million, making it impossible to pay for a tanker of oil costing US$ 5 million. However, today, the Treasury’s reserves exceed US$ 5 billion.
