It is almost eleven years ago that Moratu Maha Vidyalaya defeated their arch rivals Sri Sumangala College Panadura in their Annual Big Match in 2010 and it was after 48 years Vidyalians beat Sumangalians after their victory under Anura Weerasuriya in 1971. There was a stoppage in 1977 due to unforeseen reasons. Vidyalians last win was in 2010 under Anuruddha Kalhara Peiris and his deputy was Janidu Devinda.
This series began in 1934 and so far 69 matches were worked off and Sumangalians are leading with eight and Vidyalians seven. The auothorities of the two schools are having discussions to play the 2022 Big Match and the One Dayer and most probably it will come off in the second term.
It was the 58th encounter in the series and worked off at their usual venue De Soysa Stadium Moratuwa and Kalhara called the coin correctly and decided to take the first lease and they declared at a very healthy total of 313 for 9 and Sujeeva Liyanage and Janitha Samarawickrama missed well deserved centuries by a single and four runs respectively and in reply Sumangalians collapsed for a paltry 81 runs with Sanka Ramesh doing most of the damage with 4 for 16 and following on Sumangalians gave some resistance and scored 189 runs with Chatura Nilaweera scoring 53 runs and Sandeepa Kelum was the chief wrecker in this instance and he claimed 4 for 58. The happiest person was their Coach and Old Boy Prasanna Dissanayake.
