Hockey is to hit the top again in Kandy, the present promoters and the Kandy District Hockey Association headed by R. Maheswaran and his able committee with the hard working secretary M. Ashraff. They are all out to give their best for the Kandy District inter club men’s league tournament and inter club invitation women’s league tournament which is expected to bully off on December 16 (Saturday) and December 17 (Sunday) at the Peradeniya University hockey grounds, all participating teams confirmed on Sunday and paid a entry fee of Rs. 1000.00.
In this tournament all registered clubs will play in the “A” division tournament, and registered clubs “B sides will play in the “B” division. According to the organizers all registered players of this tournament should be born in Kandy and permanent residents of Kandy.
It is in Kandy where hockey was first played, and has a proud record of producing some of the top national hockey players and captains both men and women. Hockey, which is a popular sport in Kandy among boys and girl’s schools, men and women at club level. The game can reach great heights if they have grounds to play matches.
Priyantha Gunaratne gives up refereeing
One of the top rugger referees, Priyantha Gunaratne after a good stint has hung up his whistle as a match official in order to be closer to his family and pursue new ventures. This record-breaking referee has given his best for the game. His last game was two weeks back between Kandy SC and CH & FC.
He is a product of Vidyartha College, where he was vice captain in the year 1991 and soon after school he played for Kandy Sports Clubs “Lions” side from 1992 to 2000.He was also a top coach he handled St. Anthony’s College rugby side fir fifteen long years, and was the national under 19 coach in the years 2002 and 2003 for the Japan and Hong Kong tours of the national side. He was the Central Province under 19 coach for three years an also coached Dharmaraja College under 16 side for three years.
At the moment he is one of the Vice Presidents of the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees. He was one time president of the Central Province Rugby Referees and at present he is an advisor. He was the World Rugby level one qualified coaching match officer for Referees. In international refereeing, he was a member of the Asian Rugby Referees Union, officiated in the Dubai sevens in the years 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009 2010 and 2012and also refereed in the junior Asiad in 2007 in Pakistan Then in 2005 refereed the Sri Lanka vs India match and also has blown in a the Asian 7’s.
