Kelaniya post office broken, Rs.600,000 missing

A thief who entered through the roof of the Kelaniya main post office and broke the locks of the safe had stolen more than Rs.600,000.

The Kelaniya Police, who are investigating the robbery,

said that the theft had taken place after the post office was closed last Saturday.

When the post office was opened on Monday (3) at around 6.50 am, the acting postmaster had noticed that it had been broken into by thieves and reported it to the police.

Police said that the thieves had entered the post office by breaking the asbestos roof sheets

of the post office and then breaking open the locks on the doors of the room where the safe was kept.

The acting postmaster had told the police that Rs.643,885 rupees that had been inside the safe had been stolen.

Kelaniya Division crime scene laboratory officers as well as officers from the fingerprints division had also conducted investigations and collected suspicious data.

In addition, police sniffer dogs have also been used for inspection. Similarly, on March 4, thieves had broken into the Mahabage post office and stolen Rs.70,000.

The theft had been committed by breaking through the post office wall and entering it and then breaking open the locks of the safe.
