Former Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) Member Vipula Ranasinghe says that the Kandy Hospital has to pay Rs.60 Million to the Municipality, for the water supplied.
At a time like this when the Government has been compelled to face the economic crisis thinking about the well-being of the people and the Municipality has given relief, to the Hospitals as well as other Government agencies, the Municipal member said that Water Supplies and Drainage Board has been and trying to get the full control of the Urban Water Supplies Department to serve under them, Ranasinghe said that a meeting in Kandy on Monday.
About fifteen members including the former Leader of the Opposition of Kandy Municipal Council had participated at that meeting.
For the office premises they maintain at Peradeniya, the Water Supplies and Drainage Board, Rs.180 Million has to be paid to the Municipality, and by getting the Municipal Water Supplies Department under them, they are trying to escape from the responsibility to pay.
At present, the Municipality is providing water to the residents of the municipality, at a price less than half the rate and if by any chance the Municipal Water Supplies Department, comes under the Water Supplies and Drainage board, the urban Business Community and the Municipal Residents will have to pay a higher bill compared to the present rate, the former Member said.
He said further that there are 58 schools in Kandy and the religious places of worship and the Municipality is providing water free of charge, and such relief cannot be expected under the Water Board.
The main services rendered by the Municipality at present to the tax payers are the disposal of garbage and the supply of ater and if for any reason the Water Board takes the Water Supplies under them, what will be left for the Municipality shall be the garbage disposal only, he added.
