A senior official of the Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) Finance Department who had allegedly taken Rs.5.1 million received by the Municipal Council to spend on her daughter’s wedding without crediting it in the MC’s official account, has been interdicted.
Earlier a special investigation had been initiated on the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Ishan Wijethilaka over the alleged incident.
After checking the accounts and files related to the money received as payments to the Municipal Council, it was found that there was a deficit of Rs.5.1 million and an investigation had been initiated.
Wijethilaka said that taking into consideration the fraud and corruption reported in recent days, measures were taken to allow all the payments made to the Accounts Department of the Kandy MC to be credited to the Council account through the Postal Department.
While taking action regarding the fraud that have occurred, a programme should be launched to prevent such fraud and corruption from happening again and as one of the steps, all payments including assessments, water bills, etc. have been facilitated through post offices, he said.
