K’nochchi fishermen to submit petition against Indian poaching
The fishermen of Kilinochchi are planning to submit a petition to the Indian Government with 100,000 signatures requesting them to put a stop to Indian fishermen invading their waters.
The Kilinochchi fishermen have taken this initiative following poaching by Indian fishing trawlers off the coast of the Iranathivu Islands in Kilinochchi recently.
Earlier, only Jaffna fishermen were severely inconvenienced by Indian fishermen breaching the maritime boundaries. Fishermen in Kilinochchi stated that they will submit the petition to the Indian Government through the local Indian mission.
The fishermen further stated that copies of the petition will be handed over to the Government of Sri Lanka and the Minister of Fisheries requesting for intervention.
