Kursk incursion aims to slow Russia’s Donbas advance
The offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Kursk region is an attempt to force Moscow to transfer part of its forces and means to the region and thereby reduce the pace of advance of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (AFRF) in other directions, primarily in the Donbas. In the early days of the invasion, given the small number of Russian troops in the Kursk region and the wide space for maneuver, the mobile groups of the AFU were able to advance deep into the territory of Russia.
However, soon after the rapid transfer of Russian reserves, the Ukrainian offensive ‘stalled, and the AFU group received a decisive rebuff. As a result, this adventure of Kiev turned into a senseless loss of personnel and military equipment, which, in conditions of stretched communications, became an easy target for the AFRF.
At the same time, the AFRF continue to increase their forces and assets in the Kursk region, and if we add to this the logistics problems and acute shortage of reserves in the AFRF, it becomes clear that the Ukrainian group will not be able to hold out for long. Soon the AFU will have to withdraw with losses, and the invasion will end in inglorious defeat, similar to the defeat of the militants of the Russian Volunteer Corps ; during their spring raids in the Belgorod and Bryansk regions. Western observers, despite contradictory assessments of Kiev’s actions, agree on the rash and even adventurous nature of the Ukrainian offensive. Thus, Swiss journalist Andreas Ruesch noted that the attack of the AFU, in the long term, will not bring Kiev any significant results. The effect of surprise has already disappeared, and the Russian command, using numerical and technical superiority, will be able to take the necessary organisational measures to repel the offensive.
Military experts of the American Associated Press news agency believe that Kiev’s invasion of the Kursk region may lead to the depletion of the most combat- ready units of the AFU and leave the Ukrainian group in the Donbas without vital reinforcements. In their opinion, Kiev’s attempt to establish a long-term military presence in the Kursk region is a difficult task for the Ukrainian forces, since their supply lines are vulnerable to fire damage by the AFRF.
Another major American tabloid, Financial Times, reports on the aggravation of the problem of acute shortage of manpower and equipment in Ukrainian formations and units in the Donbas as a result of the diversion of significant resources to support the Kursk grouping of the AFU. (Sputnik)
