Kurunegala ATM robber arrested in Bingiriya

Kurunegala Police arrested the suspect who was wanted for robbing the ATM machine of a state bank in the Gettuwana Junction in Kurunegala, yesterday.

The suspect had damaged the ATM machine using a grinder in the guise of an ATM machine repairer on February 4 and had fled with cash to the value of Rs.9 million.

The 33-year-old suspect, Vidusha Indunil Adhikari is a resident of Eppawala and was arrested in the house of his mistress in Bingiriya, police said.

He was arrested following an extensive investigation carried out for 12 days by the police under the guidance of SSP A.M.U. Chandana of the Kurunegala Division. Police have recovered Rs.4.56 million of cash in the possession of the suspect. He had spent the rest of the money to purchase a motorbike, a gold bracelet, a gold necklace and also an iphone.

Investigations have revealed that this suspect has also robbed several other ATM machines in different parts of the country on previous occasions.

He had robbed two machines in the Bingiriya area and one machine in the Minneriya area. The ATM machine in Minneriya had been robbed with three other persons in the guise of a repairman in broad daylight on September 26, 2021. Another such attempt to rob an ATM machine of a private bank in Anuradhapura had become unsuccessful, police said.

It has been revealed to the police that this suspect had been arrested by the Anuradhapura Police and remanded in the Polonnaruwa Prison over the robbery of Minneriya. However, had escaped from the prison custody after being admitted to the Polonnaruwa hospital over a fake illness.

He had committed the robberies in Bingiriya and Kurunegala after escaping from the prison, police said.

According to the police, in order to commit the robbery in Gettuwana, he had arrived in the Kurunegala town by bus from Bingiriya. Then he had left for Gettuwana junction by another bus around 9.a.m. and had committed the crime. After completing his mission, the suspect had left the premises around 1 pm., police said.

Police are investigating.
