Labour Dept officers sued after case against factory – Minister

Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara said in Parliament yesterday (8) that the officials of the Labour Department who sued the company’s employers have been remanded in connection with an incident in which six employees fell into an ammonia pit and died.

He also mentioned that the employers who were accused in the incident are free without any problem. The minister said this in the debate on the No Confidence Motion against Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella. Minister Nanayakkara also mentioned: The Assistant Commissioner of Labour who prosecuted in the case in which six workers fell into an ammonia pit and died was arrested and jailed for two weeks.

“But no one has a problem in the factory where six people were killed. When this case was first assigned to the Horana court, the defendants rejected a preliminary objections, so the prosecutor was changed and a new prosecutor came and set the case aside. After that, the law was applied to those who filed the case, asking why this case was filed”.

“Those in the Labour Department of who prosecuted employers who prejudiced employees have had to go to jail. Employers responsible for workers’ deaths have no problem in the eyes of the law. Prosecution under the Act approved by Parliament has also become a problem today,” he said.
