The Ladies’ College hockey team showcased their dominance in the 17th Annual LC vs BC Hockey Encounter 2023, organized by Bishop’s College at Police Park on Saturday, by securing the Overall Championship for the ninth time.

In a hard-fought match, Ladies’ stickers clinched the Under-17 Championship with a narrow 1-0 victory over Bishop’s College. Additionally, they shared the Under-19 Championship title with their arch-rivals. Considering their stellar performance throughout the tournament, the Flower Road girls were crowned the Overall Champions. This marked Ladies’ ninth championship title since the tournament’s inception in 2005, while rival Bishopians have secured the title five times in the history of the event. Notably, the encounters in 2020 and 2021 were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with friendly practice matches played instead. Three joint-championship years were recorded in the series in 2010, 2014, and 2022.

Thimanya Ellepola led the Ladies’ College Under-19 team as captain, while the Under-17 team had joint captains Amani Imran and Shiyara Nerapola. In the Under-17 category, Bishop’s College’s Thaliya de Fonseka and Maika Tennakoon were honored with the Most Valuable Offensive Player and Most Valuable Defensive Player awards, respectively. Paranali Britto of Ladies’ College was recognized as the Best Goalkeeper.

In the Under-19 match, Bishop’s College’s siblings Maika Tennakoon and Anika Tennakoon received the Most Valuable Offensive Player and Most Valuable Defensive Player awards, while Dehara Senaratne of Ladies’ College was awarded the Best Goalkeeper.

Ladies’ College, under the guidance of coach Chandana Bandara, with the main Teacher-in-Charge Ms. Anusha Peiris and Assistant Teacher-in-Charge Malithi Paranagamage, displayed exceptional sportsmanship and skill in securing their ninth Overall Championship title.
