Lagalla water project nearing completion, to benefit 6,500 families

A long-delayed water supply project in Lagalla is nearing completion and is expected to provide drinking water to more than 25,000 people.

Speaking to the media, Government MP Dinesh Hemantha said the project, initially introduced in 2016 for residents relocated to the Lagalla planned town after losing their land due to the construction of the Kaluganga and Moragahakanda reservoirs, is now in its final stage.

Although the project was initially scheduled for completion in 2018, it was subsequently delayed amid the country’s economic difficulties. The project was also granted 10 extensions, Hemantha said.

He said the government, after reassessing the project at the end of 2024 or early 2025, provided about Rs. 500 million in outstanding funds to accelerate construction.

The contractor, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) engineers and other officials subsequently worked to accelerate the project, he said.

The project is expected to cover more than 6,500 families, with the capacity to provide drinking water to more than 25,000 consumers.

Hemantha said the water source has the capacity to meet the drinking water needs of all administrative divisions in Lagalla, with the remaining distribution network to be expanded through the laying of the required pipelines. (Newswire)
