‘Laks’ Ella’ to attract foreign travellers

The Sri Lanka Handicraft Board (SLHB) will open its 11th showroom of ‘Laks’ Ella’ near the world renowned Nine Arch Bridge which is close to the Ella Railway Station.

The newly renovated Nine Arch Bridge is located in between Demodara and world renowned Ella Railway Station. The bridge is located 272 km away from Colombo City and it became a tourist hotspot in the recent past.

According to history the Nine Arch Bridge was built during the colonial era in 1921 and the construction work of the bridge was then completed in bricks and cement.

The state owned ‘Laksala’ which comes under the Sri Lanka Handicraft Board has decided to open this showroom in this beautiful surrounding considering the huge arrival of foreign visitors to Sri Lanka. Laksala Chairman Rushan Marambage highlighted that Laksala sales have been showing a significant improvement and will expect a net profit of Rs. 100 million before end of this year.

He said business operations of ‘Laks’ Ella’ will commence from July this year.

It is said currently around 700 to 1,000 foreigners visit Ella everyday by train from Colombo to view the historic Nine Arch Bridge and more foreign travellers are expected during weekends.

According to ‘Laks’ Ella’ management, the ground floor of the building will be utilized as the showroom while the second and third floors are used as a restaurant and a terrace for visitors. He said the ‘Laks’ Ella’ showroom will also extend a helping hand to local craftsmen and women to sell their traditional handicraft items.

The chairman said he decided to establish a fund under the name of ‘Laksala Craftsmen Fund’ to provide financial assistance to craftsmen during the latter period of their lives.
