Lankan athletes for Hong Kong and Bangladesh Marathons

Two athletes are expected to take part in the 19th Asian Championship Marathon in Hong Kong on January 21 while six member Lankan team is expected to take part at the Dhaka Marathon which is scheduled to be held on January 26 at Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Madumali Perera and R.M.S Pushpakumara will take part at the Asian Marathon in Hong Kong while Sajith Jayalal will accompanied the team as a coach. The coach Sajith Jayalal said most of the key Asian marathon players are expected to take part this event while Sri Lanka’s two top marathon athletes are ready to run this event. Both Madumali and Pushpakumara secured their place for this event after they won men’s and women’s titles at the Sri Lanka Athletics organised 30km road race in Colombo recently.

Meanwhile three men’s athletes and three women’s athletes are selected by National Athletic Selection Committee headed by Wimalasena Perera who himself a former Olympian from Sri Lanka Army.

Wamalasena Perera the head of Sri Lanka Athletic Selection Committee said Dhaka Marathon is going to be good exposure for Sri Lanka marathon athletes as several foreign athletes are expected to take part this major events which are first International events of the 2024 calendar.

The marathon runners who excelled at the National marathon as well as Nestomolt marathon got chance to selected to this Asian Athletic Championship Marathon and Dhaka Marathon while the long distance athletes already got high altitude training at Boralanda, Nuwara Eliya.

Sri Lanka Athletic headed by Major General Palitha Fernando said long distance athletes have good chance and we are looking to get select for next Olympics in France.

Women’s – Vathsala Heath, N.A.K Ariyadasa, A.L.S.G Liyanage N.A.D Jayasinghe (Manager).
