At the invitation of the President of Chad, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Kenya, Kana Kananathan, attended the investiture ceremony of President Mahamat Idriss Déby, held in the capital city of N’Djamena. The ceremony was graced by eight African Heads of State, foreign and other dignitaries across Africa.

Ambassador Kananathan congratulated and conveyed the best wishes of Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe to President Déby. Ambassador Kananathan remarked, “today is a significant day for Chad and its people. As a close friend and ally, I am proud to support President Déby as he begins this new chapter of leadership”.

Ambassador Kananathan’s close connection with President Idris Deby and participation in this prestigious event highlights Sri Lanka’s commitment to fostering and strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with African countries. Chad becomes the first of the countries where the military seized power in West and Central Africa in recent years to hold elections and restore democracy and civilian rule. Chad became an oil-producing nation in 2003, with the completion of a US$ 4bn pipeline linking its oilfields to terminals on the Atlantic coast.
