Seventeen (17) Sri Lankans are among the 596 foreign and dual nationals who were permitted to leave Gaza via the Rafah border crossing between Palestine and Egypt, it was reported. Sri Lanka’s Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) stated that 15 out of the 17 Sri Lankans were expected to cross the Rafah border crossing into Egypt by noon yesterday (2).
The Sri Lankans were trapped in Gaza following the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Palestine since October 7.
The SLBFE also stated that the 15 Sri Lankans have been granted permission to leave Gaza where they were staying trapped since the conflict began between Israel and Palestine after Hamas launched an unprecedented and sudden aerial attack on Israel on October 7.
According to CNN, the Gaza Borders and Crossings Authority has released a list of 596 foreign and dual nationals from 15 countries including Sri Lanka, who will be allowed to leave Gaza to cross over to Egypt on Thursday (2). More than 500 foreign and dual nationals have been permitted to leave on Wednesday (Nov 1) when the border was opened for the first time in weeks.
The ministry posted a new list of names just before 2 am local time and stated that the people listed would need to arrive at the crossing by 7 a.m.
The Gaza Borders and Crossings Authority has listed the breakdown of the number of people from each of the 15 countries that were granted permission to leave Gaza to travel to Egypt.
The approved list of 596 foreign and dual nationals from the 15 countries who were granted permission to leave Gaza included 17 from Sri Lanka, eight from Azerbaijan, 50 from Belgium, six from Bahrain, two from Chad, 23 from Croatia, 24 from Greece, 20 from Hungary, 04 from Italy/United Nations, four from North Macedonia, two from Mexico, 20 from Netherlands, five from South Korea, 11 from Switzerland and 400 from United States.
At least 8,805 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 7, while more than 1,400 people have been killed in Israel from attacks by Palestine.
