Latest guidelines for use of antibiotics to be issued today

Senior Lecturer and former Deputy Director General of Laboratory Services of the Health Ministry, Dr. Sudath Dharmaratne said yesterday (29) that the latest set of guidelines regarding the use of antibiotic drugs will be released today. He also said that the Health Ministry and the Sri Lanka Institute of Microbiology Specialists will jointly release the guidelines during a ceremony attended by Health Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala.

A set of guidelines for the use of antibiotics was released in 2016, and this latest release provides guidance on the antibiotics currently in use.

He also said that the use of antibiotics without proper instructions leads to resistance to the drugs, which is a dangerous situation.

He stated that patients should seek advice from qualified doctors when taking antibiotic drugs.
