Postmaster General S.R.W.M.R.P. Sathkumara yesterday requested the workers of the Postal Department to report to work as usual instead of engaging in the planned trade union token strike action.

Post Master General Sathkumara releasing a media statement said that he held a discussion with Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardhana and Mass Media Ministry Secretary Anusha Palpita regarding the 48-hour token strike announced by the Postal Department Trade Unions from November 7 midnight to November 9 midnight.

Sathkumara assured that none of the post offices run by the Postal Department will be shutdown. Sathkumara said a suitable building to continue the Nuwara Eliya Postal Office will be provided by the UDA after releasing the current location of the Post Ofice for a development project, Post Master General said.

Sathkumara said that in the backdrop of reducing the loss incurred by the Postal Department which was more than Rs. 7 billion in 2022 to Rs.3 billion in 2023 by the entire staff of the department with their hard work and commitment will be negatively impacted and reversed by this postal trade union strike activity.

The goal and efforts of making the Postal Department a profit making entity by 2024 will be totally hampered if strike actions are carried out against the development activities of the Government, Post Master General said.

He also said that leave has been cancelled for the entire workforce of the Postal Department on November 8, 9 and 10.
