LG polls will be on already submitted nominations
The Election Commission emphasises that the Local Government elections will be conducted as per the earlier submitted nominations, Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said.
This is despite issues such as some political parties not being operational after submitting nominations for the Local Government elections, and some candidates switching alliances.
Ratnayake also noted that holding the Local Government elections under the current circumstances presents a good opportunity to examine the political culture of the country.
During a media briefing following an awareness programme for journalists about election reporting, organized by the Internews Institute at the Royal Mall Hotel in Kandy, the Commissioner General mentioned that the process for issuing postal votes for the Local Government election had reached a certain stage and under the current situation, it would be possible to hold Local Government elections within 35 to 40 days if necessary.
He reiterated that the Commission operates strictly within the framework of the existing law. According to the prevailing local government laws, the Commission is bound to act in accordance with the court orders issued regarding the elections. He stressed that discussions in various forums are secondary to the written law that governs the process.
“If a nominated candidate passes away, the law provides for their replacement and there is no issue in appointing someone else in their place, ”he said.
