The Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) of the Walasmulla Base Hospital has been completely destroyed due to a lightning strike with the heavy rains that occurred on Friday (10).
With the lightning strike, all the electrical equipment in the unit was destroyed and the building was also damaged by the fire caused by the lightning strike.
Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera visited the hospital to find out the damage caused on Saturday (11).
It is estimated that the damage caused to the ETU due to the lightning strike is about Rs. 50 million.
Minister Amaraweera discussed with Southern Province Governor Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena over the phone on Saturday (11) and said that money will be given for the renovation of the ETU.
Three patients were receiving treatment in the unit at the time of the lightning strike and were not injured. But due to the fire, the hospital staff had to make efforts to get the patients out, the staff told the Minister.
