Liyanage to compete at Chess World Cup

The current national champion Ranindu Liyanage of Ananda College left for Russia yesterday to represent Sri Lanka at the FIDE Chess World Cup 2021, scheduled to commence on July 11 in Moscow.

Ranindu is the first Sri Lankan player to participate in the strongest chess event in the World.

All top chess players in the world including the current world champion Magnus Carlson have confirmed their participation. Ranindu won the National Chess Championship in October 2020 convincingly.

Then he came back strongly to win the Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2021.

He also had an excellent record during the recently concluded Online International Chess Championship, which helped him to obtain more experience while playing against some of the world’s top ranked players.
