Lochana and Ranithma top Shuttlers
Lochana de Silva and Ranithma Liyanage emerged men’s and women’s singles champions in the open men’s and women’s divisions respectively at the North Central Province Open Badminton Championship, held at Anuradhapura over the weekend.
At the event which was organized by the North Central Province Badminton Association, Lochana De Silva clinched the men’s singles title, defeating Roshan Padmakumara, while 17 year old Ranithma Liyanage secured the women’s singles title by overcoming Rashmi Mudalige in the respective finals. In fact Ranithma Liyanage from Chirst Church College girls school Baddegama recently performed well to clinch gold medal at Indonesia International tournament is the current National women’s champion.
Meanwhile men’s doubles category, Madhuka Dulanjana and Lahiru Weerasinghe emerged victorious over Oshamika Karunaratne and Thulith Palliaguru. In the women’s doubles final, Anurangi Maskorala and Suhasni Vidanage triumphed over Irush Hewa Gallage and Praveen Wijesundara. The mixed doubles title was claimed by Dulanjana and Nadeesha Gayanthi.
In addition Rashmi Mudalige, the women’s singles runner-up had joined forces with Natasha Gunasekara to capture the under-19 girls’ doubles title. In the under-19 boys’ singles category, the youth badminton champion Senuk Samararatne emerged victorious, before teaming up with Sachen Chamuditha Fernando to claim the boys’ doubles title in the same age group.
Rohan de Silva the President of Sri Lanka Badminton who himself took part in this tournament won men’s masters double title with Frits Mainaky. The seven day event was organized by the North Central Province Badminton Association with the support from Sri Lanka Badminton.
