A special discussion was held at the Mannar Bishop’s House on Wednesday (9) regarding the provision of facilities required for devotees, estimated to be around 300,000, who will participate in the annual feast of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu.
The feast will conclude on the morning of August 15. Christian devotees are seen arriving these days from various parts of the country.
A special train has been deployed, leaving Colombo Fort at 6.15 am daily, up to the Madhu junction, for the convenience of devotees.
Priority was given to providing drinking water and sanitary facilities, at the special discussion.
The Security Forces have taken over this task.
Some 1,000 police officers will be deployed for security during the period the feast and other Security Forces personnel will also be assisting in security duties.
The plans for the feast which is being held under the advice of the Bishop of Mannar Rt. Reverend Emmanuel Fernando was subject to discussion by the priests in charge of Madhu Church, the Government Agent of Mannar and heads of Security Forces.
